I’ve seen this tag going around a little on some other blogs and YouTube channels, and since it’s been too cold and I’ve been too busy to do any fun blog-worthy things or put any effort into looking decent lately, I figured I’d give it a go. I cheated a little for some of the questions because I couldn’t pick just one, and I know I’m going to post this and immediately think of 45 other songs that would fit each of these categories, but this’ll do for now. I think it’ll be interesting to do this every year and see what changes, but as for 2017, here’s the soundtrack to my life.
(*disclaimer: no Kid Cudi song actually makes its way onto this list. My apologies for misleading you with this title I didn’t name it myself I just stole it from other people)
1. Song you listen to when you’re happy?
Home – Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes
I know this is a kind of cheesy song, but it’s light, upbeat, fun and it just amplifies any already good day.
Mardy Bum – Arctic Monkeys
I listen to this song pretty much anytime, but especially when I’m in a good mood. It was the first song I heard that introduced me to what would become my favorite band, and I still love it as much as the first day I heard it.
2. Song you listen to when you’re sad?
England – The National
God I love this song so much. Firstly, the actual music is beautiful, and Matt Berninger’s voice is deep and chilling as hell, but the lyrics just hit me in a way that I don’t even know how to properly explain. It simultaneously makes me sad but also makes me feel kind of hopeful and it’s all-around one of my favorite songs, but I especially like to listen to it when I’m feeling down – when I feel like all I wanna do is “put an ocean and a river between everything, [my]self, and home”.
3. What song will you have at your wedding?
The Way You Look Tonight – Frank Sinatra
My absolute favorite love song since I can remember. My husband will have no say in our wedding song #notsorry.
Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good) – Childish Gambino
This song is romantic as hell and it’s definitely being played at my wedding, if only for the fact that I’d get to confuse all my relatives with the “I know you miss this di/love” cut. Let’s all just ignore the Jaden Smith part though, because what the fuck.
4. What song do you dance around the house to?
Work Out – J Cole
I don’t think this needs much explaining. If you hear this song and don’t wanna dance around by yourself I don’t think we could be friends.
5. Song you listen to when you’re angry?
(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) – Beastie Boys
I love the Beastie Boys so much, and all their songs make me wanna fuck someone up, until I remember I’m a little girl with no upper body strength who cries when people yell at me – but I’m really tough for those 4 minutes in my head while this song is playing.
6. Song you’d have at your funeral?
In the Aeroplane over the Sea – Neutral Milk Hotel
“And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see”
“And when we meet on a cloud
I’ll be laughing out loud
I’ll be laughing with everyone I see
Can’t believe how strange it is to be anything at all”
I have a mini existential crisis every time I hear the last line of this song. Every. Time.
7. Song that makes you lose your shit at a party?
Song 2 – Blur
8. The last song you listened to?
Green Light – Lorde
Loving this song lately, Lorde is so weird but her voice is incredible and this song grows on you and then does not leave your head.
9. Song you want to hear live
Thinkin Bout You – Frank Ocean
Are you kidding me?
10. Your karaoke song?
Probably any ridiculous pop song to be quite honest. Or an angsty teen song like Green Day or something.
11. What song do you work out/exercise to?
7/11 – Beyonce
If anything just to imagine her body in this music video and cry on the treadmill.
12. Song with the most memories attached?
Mr Brightside – The Killers
The first 15 seconds of this song are like a time machine. It’s a little tainted now and kind of makes me really sad, but it was really good while it lasted. And it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
13. Song that makes you cry?
Eric Clapton – Tears In Heaven
Saddest song and backstory of all time? Yeah.
14. Guilty pleasure song
No Scrubs – TLC
Although does it count as a guilty pleasure if you listen to it on the regular?
15. Favorite song from a musical
Wait for It – Hamilton
Leslie Odom Jr. is so incredibly talented, and I don’t think this song gets the attention it deserves – understandably, though, since every song in Hamilton is a straight up masterpiece.
Take Me or Leave Me – Rent
I want to fight all of my arguments like this for the rest of my life. Just sing at me.
16. Song you hate the most?
7 years – Lukas Graham
HOW IS THIS SONG POPULAR. It is not only depressing without actually being through-provoking but it is without a doubt the most boring song I’ve ever heard. This brought out more emotions in me than I expected. I really hate this song. I’m not even gonna link this one.
17. Your favourite song of all time?
Okay I REALLY can’t choose just one here. I don’t really even have an explanation for these, they’re just songs I can and have listened to over and over again and they make me feel some type of way. Sometimes your connection to a song doesn’t really have an explanation and I think that’s okay.
Stand by Me – Ben E. King
Alison – Elvis Costello
Losing My Religion – REM
Never Let Me Go – Florence + The Machine
In My Life – The Beatles
I think that about sums it up! I’m excited to see what my choices are over the years, or maybe even over a few months. I think you can tell a lot about someone or how they’re feeling from what they’re listening to at a given time in their life, and I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into mine – I’d love to hear anyone else’s picks!
